Linda Lee Welch was born and raised in the USA. After doing a BA at the University of Alaska, working in radio, and teaching in the Inupiat village of Barrow, she came to England in 1976 to do a short course at RADA in London. She owned five acres of land north of Fairbanks, Alaska, and planned to travel some and then go home and build a house. But after her course she joined a band and ended up staying.

Since coming to the UK she has worked as a musician, writer, community artist and teacher. As well as being a published novelist and prize-winning poet, she was a senior lecturer in Creative Writing at Sheffield Hallam University for many years, as well as running Creative Writing groups in the Sheffield community and poetry and music residencies in schools.

In 2002 she spent two weeks as a guest lecturer at Meikai University in Chiba, Japan and in May 2012 was guest professor at Paris-Sorbonne University.
